About Coobara Wines

In the language of the early aboriginal inhabitants of the region, ‘Coobara’ means place of native birds – a fitting name for this family owned vineyard situated alongside the Cromer conservation park in the northern reaches of the Adelaide Hills. Established in 1992 by David Cook and his family, this 12 hectare vineyard is based on sandy-loam soils over a clay base.
At an altitude of 440m and with average annual rainfalls of 750mm/30 inches, this is a distinctly cool climate vineyard that produces fruit of intense varietal character and consistently high quality. David applied some eighteen years experience in the industry working alongside such notables as Jim Irvine, Robin Day, John Glaetzer and the late Neil Ashmead to the establishment of this boutique operation, and his hands-on approach coupled to a desire for perfection has borne exciting results.
Since his first release of a varietal Merlot from just the 2004 vintage, the Coobara stable of wines has gone on to set a new bench-mark for quality in the region and, indeed, the state. Wines Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling are grown on the property, providing David with the most noble of traditional varieties from which to craft his wines.
The small volume produced from this hand-tended vineyard unfortunately means that the wines are highly sought after and often sell-out soon after release.
In its short history Coobara Wines has gathered some extraordinary reviews and show medal successes. Most notable are; Two successive Trophies for "Best Alternative Red of the Show” at the Adelaide Hills Regional Wine Show for the 2005 and 2006 Cabernet-Merlot.
A further three Gold Medals and Blue Gold Medal (2008 Sydney International Wine Show), also for the 2005 Cabernet-Merlot A Trophy and Gold Medal for the 2005 Merlot and Gold for the 2006 Merlot
‘Five Star Winery’ rating and listing as one of the ‘Best Wineries of the Adelaide Hills’ by James Halliday in his 2010 Australian Wine Companion.
